Can this Palm be saved?

Any advice on how to save this palm?  It was originally in a pot and had become pot bound.  It took a huge amount of effort to get it out of the pot so not sure if that caused some trauma.  It's been planted in the same spot as it was located when it was in a pot.  It's been in the earth for a month or two but seems to be dying off.  I'm not sure if we've planted it deep enough as some of the roots are above ground but there is a lot of root below ground too.

  • I think the scientific parlance for this is that you've half arsed it. It needs better ground preparation and tonnes more space. You have to make the decision how much you want it and act accordingly.

Thanks for your help.  I don't disagree with your scientific parlance at all although it's more down to a lack of gardening competence :)  In terms of giving it more space, the area is quite long (at least 4 metres) so we could move it further to the left.  However, the width is limited by the fence behind and wall in front.  Would it be better to move it somewhere different entirely where it has space all around it or would it be possible to grow it in that area?

Yes to lots of space around it, no to keeping it anywhere in that narrow strip.  Yes to burying it a bit deeper.  They have very sharp spikes, so you don't want them too near any path or area where you have to walk close to them.

Prune off any dead branches, not only will it look better, it will help the new growth to come through.

Thanks very much for that.  I'll look at moving it somewhere else as well as researching plants that will be more suited to that narrow strip.

I can attest to that - ours (which has hit about 10ft) keeps stabbing me as I get out of my car!

Edit: @welshcake looks like a perfect spot for some clematis ;)

Ouch 😁 I’ll think carefully about a new location then!  Thanks for the clematis suggestion, great idea
