Have I been nurturing a willowherb??

Anna33Anna33 Posts: 316
I've had a plant growing in the garden, jumbled in amongst the other plants, and for ages I thought it was another aster or that my physostegia had grown a lot taller than I remembered. However, suddenly it's flowered, and now I think it's a willowherb. A fine specimen, but not something I fancy in the garden....

Can anyone confirm this for me before I hoik it out?

Yes ... a fine specimen of the Greater Willowherb Epilobium hirsutum ... a food plant  for some of the hawk moths ... if you keep it for a while just don’t let it seed!

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Me either, it’s really pretty!  Maybe I should start letting them grow!

Thanks all, beautiful though the flowers were, after having it confirmed it was a willowherb, it's out now. There were too many flowers coming for me to have been able to keep on top of stopping it seeding...!  But on the upside, I've now got a bit more space for some of the plants queueing up in pots...
