Save my roses!

My new neighbours arent very green fingured and kindly agreeded to give me some of their roses that they planned to bin, I moved the roses to a small patch of land I own back in February , the roses are south facing behind a hedge and dont look to have faired too well. I was feeding them but havent really inspected them for a few weeks and found that poppies have popped up amongst them - everywhere! Ive pulled the poppies up but the roses dont look well, lots of dead wood with very little leaves. Any suggestions on how to save them?

  • Probably my mistake to put them to close to the hedge and too close to each other the idea was that they would only occupy the space for a year before being moved to a bigger space.
  • Sorry the title should have been help save my roses, apologise not very good with technology and don't think I can edit it

You said you were feeding them but how much have you watered during the dry April and May? As these are newly planted, they need a lot of water and the competition from weeds doesn't help.
Cut all dead wood. Water twice per week (if there is no rain). I wouldn't feed for now, you can consider it later when there is new growth.
  • Thanks, I live on the east coast of Scotland so it's not been as dry as in other parts of the country that said there was a  week of good weather which I did water the roses well, the soil does have weeds and I need to find the time to clear the weeds, as previously stated I wasn't planing on keeping the roses in the current spot and was going to move to a more suitable location next year  - could possibly be moving and keeping the roses in pots be a good idea?
