Identify a plant

Hi fellow gardeners,
can anyone identify this plant please. Close up and 2nd picture as it grows in the garden.

    Could be Veronicastrum, especially if it's tall and has spikey flowers.
    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    thank you Busy-Lizzie. I got it last year and it didn't flower but it looks like it might flower soon. It grew about 6 foot last year but this time I cut it back in early May and I need to move it in autumn as it is too tall in the border.
