Organising a planter

Hello I’m a novice gardener but am loving my new journey of discovery.
i have a large planter rectangular shape.  It will be front of house which is south facing and gets full sun with no shade.  I can either put in several plants to make a display or one plant?
I would like lots of colour in spring summer
i would like Perennials
Evergreen if possible so still looks nice in winter
i have considered roses?

i have found a few options but get stuck when it comes to the full sun And I’m awful at decisions.  I have lavender elsewhere which is perfect but would like something different ent in this wooden container

thanks in advance

  • Hello! Welcome! Seems like you have a few options as there are many plants that do nicely in a very sunny spot in a container. But when you say large how large as that?

    For starters I would suggest these because they certainly like full sun and pot life;

    1. Agapanthus (but like to have the roots restricted a bit for flowering so if it's a massive pot maybe not, but you can also get evergreen types for some winter foliage
    2. Salvia  - so many to choose from! Great for pollinators
    3. Verbena - different varieties as some are tall and some lower growing but great mixed with other perennials
    4. Thyme / rosemary  - heat loving herbs from the Mediterranean adore full sun and do nicely in containers in sun too. Woolly Thyme trails and so it's good for the cascade effect at the edges. You could even do a full herb theme! Just make sure that the containers have super drainage, with loads of added grit.
    5. Geranium Rozanne - I have this potted up in a sunny patio area and it doing very well indeed and great for honey bees.
    6. Zinnias - these are annuals but adore heat and can be found in an array of colours that will add instant interest.

In fact, if you put all of those together I think you will have a lovely display as you can buy a lot of these in complimentary dusty mauves / whites / greens etc

Enjoy, nothing better than a container project :)
Just always make sure you have great drainage and you will certainly need to water regularly...

  • Thanks for your reply, I’ve been researching and come up with

    Viburnum Tinus
    Hydrangea
    Rhododendron
    Begonias
    Lavender
    Kamila latifolia
    Geraniums
    These sound ok?

The planter is about 1meter length and about 0.5 wide.  I’m going to fill bottom with plastic bits for drainage and so not as much compost needed
