Conifer tree maintenance/support

Hi,

relatively new to this whole green fingered lifestyle and I was hoping the forumites could help. We have some conifers in the garden and I notice some damage/decay at the bases of each. I was wondering if there was any way of salvaging them, possibly removing the damaged/dead foliage with the chance it may grow back? Or is it a case that there is more of an underlying problem?

if you might also have an idea of the genus/family that they are from that would also be helpful. They are roughly 5-6ft in height at the moment.

thanks in advance
Nick

my guess is something is,. ..... erm.... p*ssing on them
    Devon.
  • P!$$!ng cats maybe? I have spotted the occasional cat bomb on the lawn. Brilliant... Is there any way to save it or is that part of the tree dead now? Any humane feline deterrents other than a hosing from 20ft?

Must admit that this was not the potential answer I was expecting :(
