Sugar snap pea recommendations

Morning All,

could anyone recommend a variety of sugar snap pea please. I grew a variety called Jenny this year and I’m so disappointed with it- it’s starchy and just not a pleasant flavour regardless of how young I pick them or how long I leave them! I’m so disappointed with them they are bound for the green bin even though they are still producing well. Thanks

I find the same, @Flinster - and this year I was able to get a heritage variety which I remember growing successfully twenty years ago, called "Sugar Snap".  The flavour I recall was great - just right for eating raw as well as in stir fries etc - the only problem was the plants grew very tall, around 6 feet, and were prone to mildew.  (Mine are only about 2ft tall, because I had to sow them late.)  I believe that's why they're no longer commercially available here in Ireland, but I got mine from "Seed Savers" (actually based just down the road from me here).

This company in UK has them - there may be others...

thanks Liriodendron! They may be a bit tall for me as I have a small patch and it gets a bit windy here at times, but I’m glad to know there are decent varieties to be had! 😃

There's a good Alys Fowler blog about them here which may help:

I have had good results with Nairobi sugar snap peas, sweet, tender, delicious. A lot of it is weather dependent and picking them at the right moment - leave it too long and they are dull and tasteless.
