Greenhouse Tomato Problem

I have 5 Gardeners Delight ( along with 2 Marketmore cucumbers ) in large pots of sieved soil/commercial compost/garden compost. They grew well enough initally, up to about 2 ft high, with leaves, flowers and even fruit as expected. Then the growing tips started going yellow, and even white. I thought they might be dying, so in desparation I cut the top 3" off and hope to encourage a remaining side shoot to become the main stem. Is it possible these sun-loving plants got sunburn in the heat of last month, or does anyone have any ideas ? ( The cucumbers in the same mixture are doing fine ). My tomato-growing neighbour has never seen it before.
Thanks,
Geoff P.

    In a word - yes  :)
It's been difficult for lots of people with plants next to windows or in g'houses. I take it you always water down at the base though, and not overhead?
There also may not have been enough nutrients in the soil you used. I tend to just use commercially multi purpose compost for toms.

If you have a photo that will help though  :)

Do you use any shading in the greenhouse?  If not, now might be the year to start.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thanks FG - Yes, watering ( and now feeding ) from below, with lower leaves removed. Seeds were part of an oddball Xmas present (!) and by the time I went to plant up we were in lockdown, so  I used what I had available.
Thanks DFA, I did shade the cuc's, but thought the toms could take full sun - perhaps not !
    Cheers,

I understand @geoffprice1 - I had just enough compost for mine, but mine were probably done a bit later than yours too. They only went out to the greenhouse a couple of weeks ago   :)
Most  likely the sun scorch. I wouldn't worry too much though, especially if you have a few sideshoots coming along.
Some shading if you can manage it, as @Dovefromabove says, should help. It's surprising just how hot it can get next to glass :)
