Please help my aubergines!

Hello all,

I recently grew five aubergine plants from seed and started them off on the kitchen window where they grew happily.  A couple of weeks ago I moved them into individual pots and put them in my little plastic greenhouse.  Yesterday two of them looked very unhappy with brown papery spots on leaves and wilting and by tonight they are very sad indeed.  Can anyone tell me what is happening to them?

The greenhouse is quite shaded and has quite a bit of condensation on the walls & roof - could this be contributing?  I also noticed white fluffy spots on the soil of one of the plants.

Any help would be appreciated - I'm a relatively new gardener and I would love to be able to eat the fruits of my labours one day!

Hello Rose and welcome to the forum  :)  Aubergines are notoriously difficult and very picky about their environment.  They will have disliked being repotted but do recover in time but I think they also did not like the recent overnight temperatures.

Mine are a bit bigger than yours and had recovered from being potted on so they went into my unheated greenhouse a couple of weeks ago - they are back indoors again! They will stay indoors until the temperature improves and they have made some new growth.

I would keep those indoors for a while until you see some new growth,  don't overwater them, plenty of light but not direct, strong sunlight and they will likely be fine.

    Good luck!

I would think they may be quite difficult to grow in the UK as they like hot sunny weather, not humid and shady. I can grow mine down here outside in southern SW France. I would say don't over water them and they may revive in the hot temps you are going to have this week.
  • Thanks for the comments, it is always quite cold here where I am in NI so maybe they're just not the right plants for it! I will take the others back indoors and see how they do - the two in the photos have gone to the great garden in the sky I fear. Thanks for the help!
