Can someone please help identify this grapevine variety?

Hello. I have this grape vine growing in my garden in Surrey. It is against a south facing wall and always produces a large amount of grapes. I have recently added a pergola this year and trained it over. I am very interested to try and identify what it actually is. I was wondering if anyone could be of assistance? Thanks, Rob.

It looks similar to the ones my dad grew in the 60s. They were Black Hamburg and despite being a lot of work, were delicious. It certainly looks like a black grape and the bunch needs thinning a bit to ensure that the berries can achieve a good size and to get air into the middle of the bunch. There easily get mildew if they lack ventilation.
  • Thanks, Joy. It looks similar but the leaf appears to be different. Tricky business this!

I should have said that from looking at identifying websites the closest to the leaf I can see is zinfandel.

Zinfandel is the same variety as Primitivo. Perhaps an earlier resident of your house was Italian. It has also been identified that it is originally a rare Croatian variety which was sent to the Habsburgs in Vienna. From there it went to Boston and eventually ended up in California with its new name.
