Expiry dates on most cosmetic things are arbitrary. Same with most drugs. If a tablet is OK on 31st January, it is not poisonous on 1st February. The vital bit of information is how has it been stored. Blister packed drugs kept in dark cool dry conditions are OK way past the expiry date. Never store drugs in steamy bathrooms .Fridge lines such as insulin are much more susceptible to degradation if not stored at the right temperature. Do not store calpol in the fridge. A jar of cream that you dip your fingers in once a day will not last as long after opening as a pump dispenser that does not continually have more bacteria or fungi added to it. If a cream has split, chuck it. Bleach will kill almost anything, including people if you swallow it.
Please don't use antibacterial anything, it doesn't kill viruses.
Soap and water for at least 20 seconds is better than hand gel. Hand gel is only for when you can't wash your hands.
Hand gels and wipes without alcohol do not kill the virus and are useless.
Hand gel expires as the alcohol breaks down. Once the % alcohol gets below 60%, it's useless. However, expired hand gel will do if it's your only option. Especially if it's been unopened.
Bit expensive the vodka, I gather the Russian stuff is high proof.I read that none of the antiviral cleaning products used at home have actually ever been tested against covid, Dr Hilary says bleach
There is a World Health Organisation post on line which says, soap and water is best if you rub really hard, wash your hands properly, (most people dont) min 20 seconds, I say it takes 30, and that antibac gel disolves the virus, as long as it is min 60% alcohol
Under normal circumstances, I would continue to use expired gel. With things as they are now, I’d buy some new gel. Even at the supermarket, I use my hand gel to clean the trolley handles as I have no idea what type of spray or what percentage of alcohol is in the gel the supermarket provides.
Talking of expiry dates, one of the young sisters I worked with said she had moved her bed, found a lip gloss which had been there 2 years. I said it would be out of date, she said I was mad, this was 20 years ago, a long time back when they were made with animal fats, you could smell when they went "off", mascara now days will sometimes smell nasty, that gets binned.
