Brown spots on potato leaves

Hi, what’s causing the brown spots on the potato leaves? I dug up a couple of potatoes and they looked fine. They are first or second earlies (can’t remember which).

Thanks

Others will confirm, but unfortunately it looks like the first sign of potato blight, remove and burn affected stems and watch out for it on  your other potato plants.

Crap, I was hoping it was something else! Thanks Gemma, I’ll remove them now. Will the potatoes be ok to eat?

If the potatoes have had time to develop, they should be fine, the thing not to do is leave the blighted tops for too long, as it will eventually infect the tubers too.

Thanks again Gemma. I’ve now removed all the foliage and scrapped off the top layer of soil. I’ll be harvesting the potatoes in a couple of days and roast, then freeze.

My other container of first earlies were fine but they were harvested before this weeks rain.

Just checked the tomato plants and can’t see anything yet. They are the opposite end of the garden. I’ve just sprayed my tomato plants with aspirin water. Fingers crossed they will be ok.
  • I had exactly the same on mine two years running now.All grown in potato bags but only one bag affected each time. I assume the second year was  from spores on the bag even though it was washed. The other bags were not affected  and nor were my tomatoes growing close by. The potatoes, if used fairly quickly were fine but those stored also developed tiny pin prick brown spots.. I moved one bag well away and left them to see what happened. The leaves did turn yellow and die and were cut off but it didn't develop into the normal   blight you see in pictures and they were fully grown anyway so were ready to cut the stems off.None of he others were affected
