Could this be Goat Willow?

There are at least four of these plants in a rather damp area of the lawn. I’ve cut them down to the ground several times and they have sprung back every year, one is over 5 foot tall. I was hoping they might flower or do something interesting but just leaves and vigorous growth. I’m beginning to think these are weeds that ought to go?

    Rats! Looks like I’ll have to dig out the roots to get rid of them?
    Thanks for the swift reply. Might head out with the mattock before it gets dark!

    young plants shouldn't have too much in the way of roots

    Thanks, I hope so. Thank goodness the green waste collection has restarted.

    I get these everywhere, you can’t get them out easily root will go down as tall as the tree above ground. 
    The only things I put Glyphosate on.

    If a sneaky one gets too big, i keep trimming off the shoots until it gives up

    Ah, right, I’ll try that then B.   They seem to be no where and the next day they’re 6” tall with a 6” tap root, and on it goes each day.

    I just snip as I pass by.  Killed a rambling rector the same way
