Hydrangea Macrophylla

I've purchased the above and the label re temperature says 15 - 20 degrees.  I have always understood that hydrangeas are hardy, but it would appear that this one is not.  Any advice please?  Thank you.

Never heard  of one that wasn’t hardy in this country but they mess about inbreeding so much that I don’t know.  Is it a fancy coloured one.

  • Hi Lyn.  No it doesn't seem to be a fancy one.  It is blue, slightly mauve the way they are sometimes.  I bought it from Lidl, it was £6.99, and only a little more than half the price of one in the local garden centre so not special although very nice.

I’ve bought several hydrangeas from Lidl over the years. I think they are treated or forced to have a mass of blooms on quite small plants, but in my experience they are just ordinary hydrangeas, raised in warm conditions, hence the reference to 15 - 20 degrees. I kept mine in pots as part of an outdoor summer display for the first year, then planted them in the ground. They don’t flower so well the next year though, as I think they need to build up their strength after being forced.
