  Rather depends on what is behind /in front.
  Once the fab fronds grow and spread they are like a huge umbrella.
  So hopeless if a wall or fence is behind it.
  
  5ft one ...will cost a fortune.

  Thank you. Yes there is a fence behind it which I hope will shelter it. Thinking of either 4ft or 5ft maximum tree fern.  I've been reading up about them and  would like to try one  but not sure if to  bring part of the border out a bit more than 3ft.

  If you put it on the edge of the border you will only have 3ft before the fence.
  The fronds can easily be 8ft long...sometimes more
  So your fern will continually be bashing on the fence.
  
  Will it look right in a border?
  Suggest you try to see a garden that already grows them, to see one in the flesh...get advice etc.
  It is a lot of money to get it wrong ..or for it to look out of place/odd stuck in a narrow border.
