Killing weeds while allowing grass to regrow after treatment

A long time ago I bought a house with an adjacent plot which had seen better days. I managed to clear it and used Roundup to treat the soil. Not sure how long it took but eventually grass began to grow fairly healthily all over the plot. Now, many years later, I'm hoping to do the same to help an elderly neighbour who has an unruly patch of grass/weeds/bricks etc

So my question is there a suitable all purpose weedkiller (preferably eco friendly or even a home made concoction) that I could use which will kill a variety of weeds while allowing grass to regrow ? Its important that I don't nuke her garden forever.

Thanks

Try using a mecoprop based weed killer, kills weeds but not the grass

Roundup will knock everything out pretty effectively - including the grass - but it won't affect future sowings or plantings at all.

  • Thanks. I should have mentioned there was no grass growing in the area just weeds (and some rubble).

I understand Roundup should do the job but I'm just a tad concerned it'll prevent anything from growing on her plot afterwards ? Hence my desire to find a more eco friendly product. Maybe you just can't have one without the other ?

You could try diluted iron sulphate. It will kill some annual weeds and moss. It won't do much against perennial weeds. However what it does do is realy strengthen your lawn. Which in turn reduces the vigour of the weeds

Roundup (glyphosate) only works when sprayed on green leaves. It doesn't stop future germination, and is supposed to fully degrade in the soil.
