silver birch tree leaves turning brown

My Silver Birch tree is 4 years old and has grown healthily until this year. In the past 2 weeks I have noticed that the leaves have become dry and turned brown - up until then they had been growing healthily with lots of new leaves and catkins. I live in SE England and have clay soil. Can anyone advise please as to what may be the issue? Many thanks.

    My guess is it's something to do with lack of water, possibly going back as far as last summer. 
    Hopefully someone can confirm.

    It was very hot and dry in April and May, just a new leaves were unfurling. Most likely draught as AnniD mentioned.
