Vibernum smell

Hi folks, my friend has two large Vibernum just outside her kitchen door (don't know the variety) But it has started emanated a very strong pungent smell like 'cat pee'.  I have several new Viberum in my garden Vibernum Spirit.  Can you tell me what is the scent of this particular vibernum is like?

    I know if they have been attacked by vibernum beetle they smell but you would see loads of small holes in the leaves.
    Maybe a cat or fox is marking it's territory?
