replanting bearded Iris's

I have had these plants about two to three years they are planted in a very big planter, the first year there was some flowers but they don't seem happy now all I get is leaves which start going brown very quickly, I thought I would take them out of the planter and put them in the ground, my question is when is the best time of year. Thank you for any advice

The best time is autumn but you can do it anytime after they've flowered (or should have flowered). I've just finished moving a large bed out of necessity.
