Black flying beetles?

Can anyone help me identify this flying black beetle?
I have some giant lilies and for years I have been protecting them from the Red Lily Beetle. Then a few years ago I noticed some flying black beetles which looked similar bar the colour, around the lilies. So I started despatching them the same way as the Red Beetles. However this year it seems that I have swarms of the black beetles every day, with me despatching a few dozen daily! If I hadn't been getting rid of them, the whole of the bottom of my garden would be covered with them.
They land on surrounding plants, furniture and even me. I feel guilty about killing so many of them so I would be grateful for any information about them and am I right to protect my plants?
