New Laurel Hedge Advice

Hi - 1st post ! planning to plant a new 10m long laurel hedge to provide shelter to a new vegetable garden on a very exposed to prevailing wind site . What’s the best height to insure best chance of success ? It’s seems to be bigger isn’t better , but what’s ideal ? Should it be a single row or staggered to gain some width ? With it being exposed , should the hedge be staked for several years and should a windbreak be erected to protect the hedge ? And finally any recommendations for suppliers would be great .

Buy them in the winter bare roots at 3’ in height then cut it back by 6”. No staking, single row, 75cm apart,  they will make a depth of 5’ before you know it.  Pinch the new shoots out to promote lower growth, have a read through the thread recommended about.
Don’t put any fertiliser down the planting hole dig the ground well, put the plants in, tread them in very firmly, when they’ve settled in you can put some bonemeal around the edges of the trunks and slightly dig it in, they won’t need feeding again but will need lots of water, that’s why it’s best to plant bare roots in the winter.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
