Help with Holly

Anyone any idea what is wrong with my Holly? It's very sad and next to a tree that is doing well

Is it very dry? If a tree nearby is doing well, it might be taking up all the moisture in the soil.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Thank you, does Holly need a lot of water, there is holly doing well in the wood behind us? I know nothing about growing Holly.  Everything around it is doing OK.

Can we see what's growing near it?

  • Yes of course, also west yorkshire if that helps.

It is probably very dry there, what with the wall and the roots of the big tree. Also the tree canopy would keep the rain off. I would prune off the dead branch and twigs. To see if they're dead, scrape off a but of bark with your fingernail. If it's green underneath, its alive..
Then give it a really good soak. And keep it watered.
If it perks up,  later you can prune it again to tidy it up.

  • Many thanks Ill give it a go and see if it improves

1 very mature tree, and another hefty specimen nearby. All competition for water.
What is the post for? That may have damaged roots if it's very close. I can't tell from the photo  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • The post was in when we bought the house I assumed it was for support.
  • Good news and thanks, started to water the holly bush and it has sprung back into life. Thanks all looks very happy now and it growing from top to bottom.  So I'm going to keep watering and see if it comes back completely or if I need to trim :)
