New walnut tree doesn’t appear to be growing?

Hi
I’m after some advice. I planted a walnut (common) tree at the beginning of April. I have also planted some other trees at around the same time which are all growing great. However all the walnut tree has done during this time is for the buds to open slightly and now they are black with a sticky residue. I’m not sure if this is normal or the tree is dying. It’s planted in full sun and has been water regularly during the dry weather.
