onions

I planted onion sets weeks ago. The tops have grown, but bulbs have not. I have tried feeding them with Growmore and Miracle Gro, but it has not worked. Any ideas why. Thanks.

The weather has been very dry until recently ... have they been watered?

If it's any help mine are the same after a most unseasonal dry spell.  I'm beginning to start chucking any available water on them, but Dove is probably right.

Hello Dove, the onions have been well watered during hot spell, it's left me baffled. Could be the sets.

It's possibly the sets...what variety are they?  Many of my fellow allotmenteers are experiencing similar issues; watering doesn't appear to be helping.  I planted my sets in November and have kept them well watered and they appear to be doing well.

I have 3 different types of sets planted in spring and are similar.  However, I'm not too fussed yet as the bulbs often don't start to swell-up until about now, depending on weather - they've been busy growing extensive roots.  If they start going to seed then I'll start worrying.

My first year with sets, always used seeds in the past which was hit and miss at the best of times.

April and May was super dry so watered them most nights, plenty of top showing but the sets look exactly the same as when they went in. Wet this week so hopefully they will start to bulb up.
