Fern tips replicating

Why is my fern doing this. Does it need potting on? It could be overcrowded.

    They’re crested ferns ... it’s what they do. They’re a prized mutation and cost quite a bit more than the plain ones 😉 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
