Tree fern

I have just recently bought a 4ft tree fern In a pot and I am not sure how much water it takes. Do I water at the top where the ferns are or at the base.

    Conflicting advice and depends on who you listen to!
    In the pot it is going to need a lot of water.....and this is also down  its trunk every day with this warm weather (depending on where you live).
    Some advisors say never water into the crown as it will rot. But then when it rains the water will go into the crown.
    We water into the crown but not when the forecast is for cold of course and the trunk is watered more often.
    Can you plant it inot the ground?
