Climber recommendation

K80K80 Posts: 3
I am new to gardening, and having  bought a pergola that I want to use as a temporary structure from spring to Autumn, I was wonder if anybody could recommend a flowering climber that I can grow in a tub  that would climb up the pergola during summer but would need to be cut back in autumn?

Annual climbers that you start from seed each year would work in a big tub. Some examples are ipomoea, thunbergia, sweet peas, cobaea. There are some clematis suitable for containers but they might not be tall enough to reach the top (check out Boulevard clematis for example).
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Any Group 3 clematis would be cut down each year and then regrow over the course of summer. The usual time to cut them down is early spring but I'm sure you could cut them down in early winter instead if you had to.

I should think a large tub would be okay for a clematis growing to about 2m, if you regularly watered it.

Passionflower. Grows fast, grows large, likes containers and is pretty much ever green, but very happy to be cut back as well.
