Weigela

Evening everyone

So I have a Weigela Florida Monet in the garden and has been in the ground for a few years. Out of interest, is there a particular reason as to why there is no growth on this long piece of stem? It also did not flower very well

Many thanks

I don’t think it’s happy where you’ve planted it, or have you given it a hard prune. A few years in the  ground should it have been bigger than that, their fast growing shrubs.

I would just cut cut those bits off, give it a trim and hopefully it will take of for next year.

Wouldn’t I be losing a lot of the framework though? Did you mean cut off the parts that have no growth on? They are still alive however. Is it worth trying to move it instead?

They normally establish and grow quite readily as @Lyn says, if the soil and site is good, but variegated plants of any kind tend to be more prone to damage, and are often less robust. After several years, even a smallish specimen should be much healthier and bigger than that. It's often because plants are put in the ground when pot bound, or not well enough dampened, and they can struggle to establish well.
Pruning the ends encourages more new growth, but I think you may need to look at how it's growing - in terms of the soil and site etc. It doesn't look like a very hospitable site, and if it's in an exposed site, that won't help it either.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Hi Fairygirl, it’s in somewhat chalky clay soil if that makes sense? It’s relatively sheltered as well.
