Is this a sycamore seedling or Japanese Knotweed?

Can anyone help us identify this as they have recently appeared in our lawn?

    looks like suckers from a cherry tree

    It looks to me like suckers from the roots of a Prunus tree (cherry blossom or similar). Do you have a cherry tree nearby?

    No we don't .  The roots are thick and growing sideways underground

    They could be from a stump that has been cut down but not removed, maybe in a neighbouring garden. The description of thick sideways roots is consistent with tree roots.
