Hello, novice gardener here! I have this small plant/tree that’s appeared in the corner of my small garden. Does anybody have any idea what it might be? For all I know it may well be a weed 😂 many thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forums!

    Fraxinus excelsior...common name Ash.
Would recommend you remove it asap...before it gets any larger.

Thank you! Are they a nuisance? My garden has very little greenery so I don’t actually mind this too much...

There are better plants/trees to have if you have a small garden @nfhaynes:)

They eventually become enormous trees, and need large gardens. If you leave it much longer, it'll be difficult to get out, and they you'd need to use stump killer just to kill it off, or find some help to get rid of it.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks @fairygirl, I’ll get to it. Do you have any recommendations? My garden is south facing with full sun. No trees whatsoever at the mo so some days it’s simply too hot to sit out there with no shade. I’ve been looking at Rowans online today...I’m not sure if these are suitable or not? Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I’m really quite clueless.

Have a look at Mount Etna Broom ... light foliage so will give you light dappled shade rather than deep shadow. Beautifully scented golden cascades of flowers. Loves a sunny site and can cope with poor soil it gets a bit of tlc in the first few years.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
