Rob, don't know if you can make out from the photo, but my feeding station is a plastic storage box with a hole cut in it (a tricky business !) that has been reinforced with plywood to stop it splitting. I used to put food out in the open, but cats and later, foxes got there first. I found the direct entrance meant that a very flexible fox was able to get inside, so my OH built a zig zag tunnel that only the hogs can access.
I also put bricks on both the box and the tunnel to deter any attempts at access by foxes etc.

I did something similar to @AnniD, but they were so hungry when they appeared, I was able to put food out among plants for them, and watch them before it was properly dark. I was aware that the endless parade of cats round here would soon appear though, and I made a proper set up for them which they used.

Lovely pic @AnniD - but those owls don't look too lively.... :D

The little one also enjoyed a dead bee I found

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks Hosta and AnniD - well, your setups obviously work!  Will have a think - don't know whether to just feed them or give myself the chance to (easily) look at them, which will obviously dictate site and possibly materials for the feed station!  Wonder if I can do something rudimentary with this for starters:

Thanks Fairygirl - posts crossed!  Endless parade of cats sounds about right :(

If the diameter of the pipe is about the same as a cd, it's a good start  :)
