Gooseberry historically un co-operative

My Goosegog just will not play the game. I've had it for five years (ca 3ft x 2ft) in a massive container in a slightly shady spot. It's not water-logged and is fed and watered when needed. Every single year it shoots up throughout April and early May and then the top two or so inches of each new branch get powdery mold and it never flowers. I had strawberries in there also but moved those last year and have also tried just watering the base. It's well trimmed and gets air circulation without wind.
All I can think of is move it to a sunnier spot?
Luv Dave

I don't think I've ever noticed flowers on my two gooseberries, the berries just seem to appear. Mine are also in a shady spot and don't seem to mind. I think I would just bin yours and start again with a new plant and new soil. 5 years is too long to nurture something that doesn't perform.

There's hardly a berry on my goosegogs this year, though they look healthy despite the drought (now thankfully ended!). Red & blackcurrants, blueberries, Japanese quince and all the bramble family thick with fruits or flowers but no gooseberries. I wondered if one of those unexpected frosts had struck at just the wrong moment for them, as they are normally reliable.
