Small holes with slime on outside

Hi
can anyone identify what might be making these small holes with slime around the top in the lawn at the side of my house under trees. And if this is an issue I need to address.
Many thanks

Where do you live? That looks like the stuff of nightmares.

Berkshire. And there’s at least 20 holes. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

Are you sure the slime and the holes are connected? The slime looks like the after effects of slug pellets.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I thought maybe it was something eating the slugs, causing a slime attack at the entrance.

  • This reminds me of the series "Stranger things"  :_D If I have to guess I would probably say the same as @Blue Onion, something eating the slugs. If not, maybe a new species of tunel digging snails  :open_mouth:

Good point - no I’m not sure the holes and slime are connected. About half have slime and half don’t. And they are just jokes, not tunnels. We don’t have a slug problem, well don’t ever see any slugs, and not used any slug pellets. But new holes appear overnight, every night....

How big are these holes, difficult to see on the picture?

Is your ground really hard? Those look like abandoned rat holes to me, where they started digging but gave up due to lack of progress...
