Drastic pruning needed

I think I am heading into trouble down this side of the garden as the trees on the other side of the fence are starting to take over.  It is pretty much scrub ground on the other side and I probably planted everything that is there, so nobody is going to mind what I cut back.

It is hawthorne that is overhanging that evergreen, how drastically can I cut that back, I know hedges recover well but this is a fair size.

There is also a Rowan that is going to create far to much shade and dominate everything under it, can they be cut back?

And finally that maroon Acer (in the garden),  how far can they be cut back,  I don't want to be just left with wood.

  • Please do not prune the Acer while it's growing. Best time to do that is when it's leafless and dormant. And pruning them can ruin their natural elegance...so would suggest patience and better to leave it last.

Hawthorn is pretty tough, so just cut it back as much as you need to. The rowan is usually a light, graceful little tree which doesn't usually cast too much shade but you could cut some of the lower branches on your side if you want to. I agree with AmancalledGeorge that the acer is best left alone.
