Clematis Prince Charles

I planted out my new Clematis Prince Charles three weeks ago.  The plant was very healthy, I followed the planting instruction and watered in well.  I’ve watered regularly during the warm weather, over the past week I’ve noticed the plant gradually turn brown from the base up.  Both stem and leaves are affected.  What is the likely cause?  Very new to gardening so as much advice as possible would be welcome. Thanks

It most likely needs more water but you may have accidentally damaged it while planting (or something's nibbled the base), has it got lots of stems or just one or two? Tbh it's been so hot (in some regions at least) that a lot of  the newly planted have complained by keeling over!

I'd agree with @mikeymustard. If it's in a sunny position, it will really be struggling while establishing.
Even good sized specimens are struggling. I've just got some from Taylor's and even here, it has been ridiculously hot for them.
Mine are in pots just now, apart from one, and they've been in shade for the last week. Fine now as it's been cloudy and wet for the last two days.

Did you spray or mist the foliage when you watered? I had a clematis 'Marie Rose' from Taylors... although it hasn't had the same problems as yours, the foliage was very tender on it... suspect it had been kept nice and sheltered on the nursery. I planted it straight out into direct sun, and seem to have got away with it. I expect if I had misted the leaves with water on hot days, it would have gone brown and crispy.

  • Thank you thank you all for answering my enquires.  I feel I watered my clematis enough however, I did not mist the leaves.  The plant continues to grow and it has quite a few flower buds appearing at the top.  It still isn’t the healthiest looking plant but I shall continue to nurture it to the best of my ability.  Just a thought, would it be helpful to cut the plant down completely, as you would do for clematis wilt?
