When to prune Clematis virginiana

Hi
i have a Clematis virginiana (devil’s darning needles) which has flowered for the first time this year. However I have no idea when to prune it or what pruning group it belongs to. Can anyone advise.

Any time, apparently.   It's not one I know and it doesn't feature on the "clematis on the web" site I use as a major reference source but I did find this - https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/clematis-virginiana/

Are you in the US and, if not, where did you buy the plant?   It is a USA native and has male and female forms.

  • Hi thanks for that. I’m in Birmingham UK. I got the plant, a pack of 5 climbing plants, from an advert in the Daily Mail newspaper. Unfortunately when I planted them I mixed them up. I was able to identify the plant on an app but can’t find any other info which is uk based. Ill check out you link.
    Thanks.  Liz

I'm not sure that's what it is. These apps are notoriously bad with giving misleading info too.
Perhaps @Richard Hodson could help if he's around   :)

Ah well, it is unlikely to be a virginiana if in the UK.  Far more likely to be a montana.  Is it scented?

That's what I was thinking @Obelixx. Flower looks too big for the other one anyway.
Either way, it'll need to go in the ground  :)

  • Hi obelixx
ive found out my clematis is a Montana ( I eventually found the original order from 2017). The order does not say what type of Montana but at least I’m on the right track. Thought you’d like to know. Now need to find out what it’s name is.

    Thanks

It won't really matter which one it is - they all have roughly the same habit, size and flowering time etc. Care is the same regardless of variety  :)
It certainly won't thrive in that pot though.  :)

Montanas like to grow big so it definitely needs to be in the ground.  They're in Group 1 for clematis pruning which means they only get pruned to tidy them up and keep them in bounds once flowering has finished.

If you enter "montana" in the Group box on the search facility on this site you will get loads of possibilities - http://clematisontheweb.org/new-clemlistsearch.cfm
