Why are my hydrangea buds turning brown?

Hi,

I am a complete novice gardener so looking some advice!

I planted this budding hydrangea around 2 weeks ago in a large pot at the front of my house. I have watered it everyday, fed it with tomato food twice, and it’s in sun and shade each for about half the day.

I have noticed it hasn’t really grown at all since I planted it - the flowers on there are the same ones as when I bought it. The buds are now turning brown and I worry that they won’t bloom at all?

Can anyone let me know how I can fix this?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum  :)

You have a Lacecap hydrangea ... it's a type where not all the florets open, giving an attractive lacy effect ... info and advice here https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/seven-lacecap-hydrangeas-to-grow/

Thank you! This is really useful, I hadn’t realised there were so many variations 😊

It’s a very complex mating process with this type of hydrangea, the middle flowers open briefly whilst pollen is transferred to the outer flower, then the middle ones curl up and die, job done. This is the only hydrangea to produce pollen (I think) and is a very good source for bees. The others are useless for bees as they are sterile.
