Retaining wall in poor drainage soil

Hi, first time poster here and just looking for some gardening / landscaping advice.

Planning on levelling my slightly sloped garden. Planning on using sleepers to build a retaining wall around grass area.
However the area at the bottom of my garden, where the garden dips considerably, has very poor drainage. During the wet months water gathers in the grass behind the brick wall. See picture for a better idea.

Just wanting to get advice on whether I would need to deal with this drainage issue, and how, before I begin building the sleeper wall. Concerned that my sleepers will potentially be sitting in a puddle at times.

Hopefully I have explained this ok and the picture helps.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is this quite a new build?
Landscapers laying grass tend to run a compactor plate over the soil first which certainly makes for poor drainage.
You might find if you lift the turf and dig the area over it will drain better, you can improving the soil will also help.
  • Thanks for the reply K67. Yes it’s a relatively new build, built approx 15 years ago. I’ll try the rotating the soil and adding some new soil before laying the wall. I fully intend on placing draining on the grass side of the retainer wall, pipe and gravel, and the wall will be relatively close to the current brick wall so hopefully the problem won’t affect the wood. Thanks again for your reply.
