Oriental poppies

Hi. We are having a problem with our Oriental poppies, in as much as. They are growing well, except for the flower stems, they are hidden in the foliage, and never reach more than about 6 inches, whereas in our previous garden they grew t around 18 inches tall. We are in need of advise please.

It wasn't cold enough last winter for them.  Tulips can be affected by the milder winters we are now seeing too, growing much shorter stems than usual.  Nothing we can do (apart from taking climate change seriously, of course.)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Same here on poppy and tulip front in warm sunny (mild and wet wintered) Kent.
