    Hello NickL and welcome to the forum. It looks as if it might be an ornamental Allium. These come in many shapes and sizes and are very attractive.

    I think maybe it's a Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon Tragopogon pratensis .. a lovely name for a weed.

    Tragopogon as blue onion says. It will look like a giant dandelion clock.

    Or it’s relative the Salsify Tragopogon porrifolius

    Perhaps more likely in a garden?

    Not an allium.

    You could be right with that @Dovefromabove .. that one does look a bit purple at the top.  Not much of a meal though.. only growing one.  :smile:

    Just seen this in my aunt and uncle's garden, they say it's salsify!

    They are quite correct.....salsify is the common name.
    Tragopogon is the latin... correct name.

    Sometimes common names can lead to confusion.
    Especially abroad.
    While using the latin name it means the same in every county , every language.
