wayward climbing rose

I have a beautiful climbing rose called Summer Wine.  It used to be trained on an arched trellis.  When the trellis disintegrated it was removed and a new support put in at right angles to the original and I tied the rose loosely to that.  Most of the branches tied in became spindly and weak but all new shoots shot upwards vertically into the sky.  I am now left with a beautiful rose growing ever upwards with no support, so waving about in the wind.  It clearly didn't like the new support so what now?  Anybody got a revolutionary idea?

    Could you add a photo?
  • sorry - forgotten how to do this, but here it is waving about and definitely not wanting to be trained to the right.

Roses trained over an arch or other support will always throw out new vertical shoots, my Claire Austin does this all the time. It needs, I'm afraid, careful watching and regular tying down of all the new shoots - not an easy job at all, especially at the top of a ladder. You could try pruning it right back in the winter and starting all over again but I don't know of an easy answer, hopefully others might. It is a lovely rose by the way.
