5,000 year old forest

5,000 year old stumps of oak, birch, willow and hazel are being uncovered by the sea on the West Wales coast.

It’s not an every day occurrence and the weather, the tide and local knowledge of where to look need to converge to reveal the ancient trees that covered the land 3,000 years before the birth of Jesus.

The preservation is so unspoiled that the grain and growth rings of the trees can easily be seen and wondered at.

This preserved forest from the past has given rise to the belief that a mythical sunken civilisation known as Cantre’r Gwaelod stretched 20 miles further west than the current shoreline. It was said to have been so fertile that it was valued at four times the cost of land anywhere else.

In recent years a prehistoric man-made walkway with posts have been uncovered along with fossilised human and animal footprints. This offers proof that thousands of years ago the land really was settled.

Makes you wonder if Allan Titmarsh is really as young as he appears to be!

Is that the place that Time Team excavated?  I have a recollection of a similar site and a prehistoric walkway,  would have been decades ago so you may be too young to have seen it  :)

Hi everyone, I thought you would find it interesting. Seeing them for real and touching something that grew 5,000 year ago is really rather special. I'm not sure about the Time Team program I don't recall seeing it even though unfortunately I am old enough to have seen it. The location of the forest is a small town called Borth.

It's a real thrill to touch the remote past like that, isn't it. Where I live there are many fossils which wash out of the cliffs in rough weather. Fantastic!
