Pond emptying - is it normal?

I built a new wildlife pond this spring which is about 20sqm in an oval shape. The water seemed to be draining quote quickly - I thought it might be to do with soil from inside the pond touching the soil at the rim so I adjusted it all a couple of days ago so now there is a clear 10cm ish gap of butyl pond liner going over the lip of the pond. I then refilled her up. Since Friday I've already lost about an inch in water - is this normal? I should add that I have an open South facing garden with zero shade at the moment so it's literally hotter than planet Mercury out there! Would water evaporate that quickly in these very hot days? (I'm based in Essex and the weather has been super sunny... where has all the rain gone?!)

I think it's just evaporation. If you had a hole or something, it would drain very quickly.

Mine has quite a bit of evaporation too, plus all the creatures drinking from it as well, and as it isn't a very big pond,  it doesn't take long for it to drop   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    I've got a " lake"  0.8 acre and it's dropped by about 12 inches
    Devon.
  • Thanks both - I do have underliner on top of the liner as well as underneath so I really hope there isn't a hole! It is just so hot out there (I can't even be out there at the moment!) so I'm hoping this is what it is... fingers crossed  :)

@gilla.walmsley - get him with his lake   :D
Too  hot for me as well. It's to cool down here during the week- I can't wait!

@Hostafan1 - you do realise it should be a lochan you have, since you're a Scot  ;)

but the body of water is in Devon, so it's not Scottish.

Very normal after all this very warm weather. Also any plants in the pond will be taking up water as well as they grow. Our pond goes down inches in just a few days.
  • Thanks very much @bertrand-mabel that's very reassuring to hear!
