Stumps?

PalustrisPalustris Posts: 4,307
Watched a few minutes of Gardener's World last night. Weird chap was putting logs in a woodland/shaded area and planting up with ferns etc. Had a thought. Would it work in this area to the left of the Beech tree? I have a lot of tree stumps available.
TIA

Yes, they would look great in that area. If it's good enough for Prince Charles and Adam Frost (the weird chap) it's got to be good enough for you. A few ferns as well and you're good to go!

Worth a try as long as you can improve the soil to give the ferns a good start.  In real woodland there'd be lots of leaf litter over the years.

Use as many as you like as long as they're attractive then make or use planting pockets in between.

How many have you got? :D
The Victorians went in for stumperies in a big way.
I like ferns and they like living here, usually cool and moist, so I made a mini one along the bank behind the garage, which is in full shade. I used nicely shaped old mossy logs and interesting curvy branches, added lots of ferns, many of them wild from the garden and a few more special ones, some primulas, Heucheras, and Trilliums for the spring and now it is one of my favourite places. Looks good all year round and always something to see, especially now the plants are established and reproducing.

I would just go for a great big log pile. The critters will love it.

How many stumps? About 20 in varying sizes, all conifer ones.
There is already a huge log thing down the edge of the garden, waiting for the conifers bits to dry out so they can be used in a friends log burner. We have removed 40 odd metres of tall Leylandii recently.
I think I will give it a go, but not just yet, there are a lot of other jobs needing doing first.
    Thanks folks.
