I’m back already! Well we bought two clematis plants last week and have planted them in two large pots. I understand that the roots like to be cool so we are looking for small plants to put around the base in each pot. Can anyone recommend something suitable bearing in mind it’s a partial shade spot being south east facing? We have a clematis Sasha and an Asao for Info.
I don't put anything at the base. It's just competition for the clematis. They just need to be kept well watered if they're in pots. A layer of fine gravel would be better as a general mulch, and to dress the containers What type is Sasha? I see the other one is a Group 2, so you would plant that a little more deeply to encourage more shoots.
I just had a wee look and the Sacha one is a boulevard type, so that should be easy enough. Cut back at end of winter/early spring. That looks a very nice clem You would probably be better treating the other one as a Group 3 too if it's staying in a container, but you can do either really. Each year you'll need to refresh the soil mix in the pots as well, and make sure you keep them well fed and watered, unless you're going to eventually plant them in the ground
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thanks @Fairygirl. I'll take your advice on that then and get some fine gravel. We like the idea of including some lower level beauty/colour so I guess we can get some additional pots which we can spread around, again for a partial shade area. Any recommendations?
That's a good idea. I don't grow much in pots other than sweet peas, or things that I'm growing on, but I do have lots of things in shade. Ferns are always good, and things like Heucheras. There are loads of varieties of those, but just keep an eye out for vine weevils. Some grasses too - Hakonechloa is excellent, and you should be able to get those fairly easily. I grow H. m. Aureola, and that's the one you'll see most often, but most are a good colour for a shady spot. Carexes also do well - but make sure you avoid the invasive one C. pendula. Hardy geraniums too - lots of types, and happy enough in a decent sized pot.
If you like them - Fuchsias grow best in shade, so you should be able to get those quite easily. That's a start anyway - those are all quite easy as well - don't need too much attention
