That depends on whether you want summer flowering bulbs or spring bulbs.

Getting a bit late for planting summer bulbs for this year but it's a good time to be consulting the online catalogues and placing orders for spring bulbs for delivery.   Daffodls/narcissus can be planted from mid August, hyacinths, from September onwards and small bulbs such as crocus and irs reticulata need planting as soon as they arrive so they don't dry out and die.

Tulips are best planted from mid November or they can suffer from a blight.

If you look through the catalogues, they should tell you the height the flowers grow and when they are likely to flower.  Most tulip bulbs are short-lived; you'll get a good display in the first year, half as much or less in the second year, and hardly anything in year 3.  If you buy those marketed as "perennial" or "species" tulips, they will flower year after year.  The flowers are a bit smaller and less showy, but there are lots to choose from and I think they are much better value.
