Which ornamental grass?

madpenguinmadpenguin Posts: 2,543
Looking for an upright grass (not fountain like) that grows no more than a metre,hardy,non-invasive,drought resistant.
Like a Miscanthus zebrinus in growth.
Any recommendations?

  • What about panicums? Can't think of anything stripey like Miscanthus 'Zebrinus' as (I think I'm right in saying) a virus causes those markings. Take a look at Knoll Gardens online. I would have suggested Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' but that's too tall for you.

I was also thinking Calamagrostis × acutiflora Karl Foerster may suit. Mine get to no more than 1.5 metres
I bought 4 and divided into 8 the following year.
They stand bolt upright even in strong winds and keep to their own space. They sound lovely too rustling in the breeze

Knoll Gardens specialise in grasses. I'd recommend having a browse through there https://www.knollgardens.co.uk/product-category/grasses/

...this is Pennisetum 'Fairy Tails'... as you can see a long season well into autumn..
...no need to worry about hardiness where you are..

Another vote for Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster'

You see it quite a lot in public plantings - it is tough and trouble free.

    Karl Foerster looks good.
I think the spot I have for a grass can take the height and think it could be a 'bold' planting.I have lots of small plants but sometimes having one large plant looks better.

Worth mentioning that Karl Foerster continues to stand upright throughout the winter too and still looks good

That would definitely be a plus!
