Thanks @BenCotto. Checked there and slug free thankfully, but I did notice new growth (pictured) so maybe all is not lost!! Thanks for the suggestion.
@Obelixx we had a level bed there previously so wanted to go for something different, plus we couldn't get any more sleepers after lock down kicked in so just went with what we had. I do have water run-off issues so need to put in some form of barrier slightly higher than the edge to help with that. As I said, it's a work in progress 😁 I have also started watering the entire bed as opposed to just around the plants so hoping that will help as well 🤞
And thanks @Fairygirl would you cut it back to that higher new shoot and put in an obelisk for this season? Probably should have left it in its pot longer in hindsight, but was too eager to get it climbing up the wall to cover the planks at the top. At least the Jasmine will help with that down the line.
Thanks again all. So amazing to have this forum and support 👍
Yes - I'd cut that back to those new shoots. It'll send up more shoots over time If you already have an obelisk of some kind, then yes, put that in [very carefully ] for it grow onto. As @BenCotto says- slugs can be a nightmare with young shoots, and you don't always catch them in the act, but if that top growth is dead, there's no advantage to keeping it on the plant. It's often the tiny slugs and snails which cause the most damage too, and they sneak in there when your back's turned
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I bought some clematis from Taylors who recommend sinking some tubing when planting so some water gets to the roots: the sort of white tube used by plumbers. I guess doing it now would damage roots when it is needing its roots to recover. You could try that if/when you replant
Hey guys. Sorry for the delayed responses. Have been busy with family and funerals unfortunately. Thanks @Fairygirl. I cut off the dead growth to the highest new shoot and it seems to be happy and growing, so very hopeful it's happy where it is so I'm guessing the dead growth was due to shock with the move? @berarde great minds, I had gotten a plumbers pipe and inserted it before reading your message. Put it in at an angle so hopefully hasn't damaged the roots. It seems to fill up and then drains slowly but I'm sure its helping. Might be too long, maybe 2 feet at a guess, but will keep an eye and shorten if needs be 👍
That's great @Davewalsh29. Really hope it thrives now
I have an Actea in one area of the garden, which - although always damp - likes good moist soil. There's a lot of other planting there, so I used something rather different for inserting in beside it. An old welly boot

That's amazing @Fairygirl 😁 did you bury it, or just placed beside it with a hole in the bottom? Might have to rethink the plumbing pipe down the line so something like this could work
Yes - they were knackered, so I just cut off the foot, and dug a deep enough hole to slot it in, then filled it with gravel, to stop it collapsing. The top sticks up a little, but the surrounding plants hide it.

I know you've checked for slugs and snails ... but check again, at night, after rain ... the little b*****s go out on damp nights and strip the bark off the main stem ... you might not notice it but to me it looks as if that's been happening.

Just wanted to update ye and say thanks again for all yere help. The Taiga is about to burst into flower, something I didnt think possible when I first added this post.
The only thing is this is a group 2 Clematis. Do you think this will revert to this flowering time again next season or start flowering when it should around May?
