Hardening off Tomatoes

Blue OnionBlue Onion Posts: 2,995
So.... thanks to Covid-19 and working from home, my tomatoes from seed have spent most of the day outside since seedling size.. going in and out of my home depending on weather and temperatures.  In the past week I've left them outside until bed time around 10pm.  The nights are now warm enough for them to be planted outside (13-15C) in my area of Utah, USA.  Do I really need to leave them outside in their pots for a week now, or will it be fine to just pop them in the ground.  My thinking is they are plenty tough and would benefit from the warm soil in my raised bed around the root balls compared to sitting in pots at night.  Day time temps are currently 28-32C.  They've been potted on once, and currently still have space to grow in their current pots for another week.. but it's easier to just plop them in the ground now.

Thoughts?

Sounds like they're already hardened off. I did the same, out on sunny days from late April then all the time except cold snaps in May, and they've been out a week or so

I think you've already done the hardening off, get them in the ground and just keep an eye on the weather forecast incase it gets unseasonably cold overnight.

Thanks for sharing your advice and personal experiences.  I ended up putting my early type in the ground two days ago, but have held off with my cherry types.  I'll pop them in the ground tomorrow.
