Frost, under-watering or verticillium wilt?

Hello🙂
The shrubs in my garden seem to be dying on mass. A few weeks ago this forum helped me diagnose verticillium wilt as the cause of death for my little acers. I have now noticed two other small potted trees become poorly with very distinct leaf colour change.. vivid rust colour against healthy leaf fading to a dead brown colour. Does this look familiar you anyone? Twisted Hazel and Viburnum. Thanks in advance!

Both plants should be grown in the ground. As container plants, they will need constant watering to keep them going. They look like chemical burn damage or possible water over the leaf whilst the sun has been out.

Any shrub grown in a container can be vulnerable to the elements. That could be extreme cold to extreme heat, watering issues such as inconsistent watering. This can affect the plant's vigour and sometimes results in plants growing weakly.

Thanks so much Borderline. Perhaps I went a bit heavy on the miracle grow.  Sadly we are on about 2 inches of poor soil and then chalk 😕

@Sazz101 there is a book 'A Chalk Garden' by F.C. Stern. It might be interesting to explore plants that suit your soil.

Thank you Micearguers :) The RHS recommendations for chalk are always so dull. Maybe this book will have some inspiration!

You may be able to build up your topsoil to allow a greater variety of plants.

Thanks Posy. I have spent a small fortune on soil improvers in raised beds to get my favourite herbaceous perennials in the ground. Now I’m digging up the lawn for more beds 😆

These small trees have been gifted to me, and need more than a few inches of soil in my crowded borders. So they’re fated to a life in pots - until I win the lottery and move to a small holding with miles of wonderful loamy soil that is 🤞
